When planning your kitchen and bath remodel, the most important thing for you to consider is how you want to feel and how you want others to feel in your space. Functionality is one thing. You want your sink to drain, your toilet to flush, and have convenient storage options. Unless you are designing a kitchen or bath for a garage, you want your home to feel like you. Whether that means modern, sleek, or cozy, the materials you choose will help reflect how you like to exist in your space. Sometimes both literally and figuratively.

Countertops are the easiest initial example. Marble is a beautiful material that has been highly sought after by architects, artists, and homeowners for thousands of years. While the luxury appeal is certainly there, marble is also a highly reflective material. When used as a countertop in a kitchen, even if it is a smaller room it will create a perception of a larger space. Alternatively, butcher block or concrete countertops absorb light due to their natural textures. This creates a warmth that can cause a more homey feel. Not only are countertops a focal point for whichever room you are redesigning, they are also key in creating the sensation you want in your home.

The same can be said for cabinets and hardware. Metal cabinet handles or high gloss cabinet materials, such as Ultralux from Ultracraft Cabinetry, will help brighten and modernize your design. Thermofoil is another cabinet material that is man made and reflects light in a more subtle way. Alternatively, wooden cabinets create a more natural, cozy environment. Depending on the type of wood you choose, you can create a wide range of aesthetic impacts.

Different types of wood have warm or cool tones, and the individual texture characteristics that naturally occur will provide a depth of character that ranges from subtle to outspoken. Whether you want something sleek or natural, your cabinets will certainly create a visual impact.
Designing a kitchen or bath has so many moving parts. Everyone - from your parents to your contractor - will have opinions about what you should do and how you should make your space look. Ultimately your house needs to feel like you, all the way down to the bones of your design choices. From your countertops to the hardware on your cabinets, the way the texture of the materials you choose reflects or absorbs light will impact how your space is perceived.
